Screen Door Latch
Welcome to screendoorlatch.net – the website dedicated to everything to do with helping you get the best screen door latch and screen doors for your home, whether this means buying one off the shelf or from a supplier, or simply taking the initiative and building one yourself. Screen doors are great things to keep your home ventilated properly (especially when you live in the warmer climates). Most doors are lightly attached to the front of their house by a simple screen door latch that is rarely locked (or rarely even has the potential to lock).
For those that are looking to build your very own screen door (which you will need to acquire a separate screen door latch for) you are in luck, as I have compiled a simple and easy to follow guide for you.
Before doing anything you should go around to the front (or back, depending on where you want your door to sit) of your property and take the time to visualise where your door will hang, and where your screen door latch will attach onto the wall. Next you should take a good measurement of the area and get a piece of chalk and mark onto the wall the area where you want your screen door latch to fix on. This will ensure that you don’t block this area by building anything in front of it, so it’s good to do this part early (before it’s too late). I am assuming here that you already have all the correct tools that you need, so let’s skip onto the next step.
Next, you need to go out and buy all of the materials that you need for constructing your screen door (unless you already have them). This will include the metal frame, the thin wire mesh, any nails that you need, glue and a screen door latch.
Once you have got all of this, cut you metal pieces into long, straight shapes so that they can be fastened together to make the metal frame. This should look like a large rectangle, with one piece of metal going across the middle to provide support for the mesh and the screen door latch. Next, place the mesh over the top and trim away the edges that overlap. Use your glue to make sure the mesh stays where it is, and leave it to dry for a while. After a few hours in the sun, come back out and attach your screen door latch onto the side (you should have measured where this will need to be already) and glue it in place.
Most of this job is actually pretty simple and easy to accomplish but for the exception of the screen door latch, while must be attached to your screen door at exactly the right height so that it matches to latch on the side of your house (that it closes in on). Any errors at this stage can be removed by simple and careful planning and a patient and methodical thought process.
